How To: Examinations
Oral examinations to complete the modules „Synthesis“ (SYN), „Catalysis“ (CAT) and „Techniques“ (TEC) after the first two semesters.

Module SYN:
Module examination covering the compulsory courses 12.1, 12.2 and 12.9 (see Module catalogue)

Topic: Synthetic chemistry problem solving

Module CAT:
Module examination covering the compulsory courses and the attended compulsory elective courses of the CAT module

Topic: Catalysis problem solving

Module TEC:
Module examination covering the compulsory courses and the attended compulsory elective courses of the TEC module

Topic: Structure elucidation problem solving

One examiner each from Inorganic Chemistry and Organic Chemistry will jointly conduct the oral module examination. Ideally, for the three exams you should choose six different examiners.

The duration of each oral examination is 30 minutes.

The final grade of your Master’s degree is calculated as follows:

Module examination SYN 20%
Module examination CAT 20%
Module examination TEC 20%
Master’s Thesis 40%

Please notice:
In some of your courses a written examination is offered at the end of the course (usually for students of a different subject area, for example MSc Biology). We recommend that you take part in these examinations, which will not be graded for you, in order to be able to estimate the exam contents, the type of questioning and so on.

Examination periods are as follows:

Winter semester:
September 1 to December 15 and February 1 to March 31

Summer semester:
May 1 to May 31 and July 1 to July 31

We recommend that you take your oral module exams in your third semester.

You can reserve appointments for your module examinations yourself under TEMPO upon announcement by the Examination Office for Chemistry. Information can be found here:
